  Not for high altititude
I just received my Honeywell Weather time barometric weather forecaster. A big 'Thank You' to all the previous buyers who had advice on set-up. That helped until I discovered the unit will not register altitude above 3999'. That means I will never have an accurate reading on this unit. I live at 5240' above sea level. Honeywell TE653ELW Portable Barometric Weather Forecaster
  Precision could be better
I bought two of these since I wanted a base station in my basement office and one on the main floor. That meant I had 2 bases and 2 remote sensors sitting beside each other while I was setting them up. One of the base stations shows a 3 degree F temperature difference from the other 3 units. I checked this the next day in another location and the problem was still there. This is clearly a defect but not so much that I would take it back. This thing is still great and other than this problem I would have given 5 stars. This should have been spotted if any quality check had been done. The humidity reading across the 4 units is consistent. The readings are kind of low but I am blaming Winter and my furnace for that. Both base stations read both remote units but not each other. It would have been good if they had the ability to switch on remote broadcast from the base units as well.

The documentation is garbage but I had no trouble setting the time zone once I saw the other customer's comment that the day had to be displayed on the time line before hitting the up button. It took quite a few tries to get the altitude set since I didn't get the insert that some people mentioned. I can't say how I did it. I did reinsert the batteries and then I just kept pushing the buttons on the back until eventually the altitude switched to 10m and started to flash, at that point the up arrow on the back was able to adjust it to my desired setting.

From a usability aspect it is great to see the 24 hour barometric trend on the screen but why did Honeywell set it up so that it flashes the updates every second. They should have just displayed the info without the constant reloading. If the goal there was to show a sudden change then this would be wrong place to do it anyway since you really would barely notice.
  Good product, works well
I really like the product. The only problem I've had was trying to change the time zone. It thinks I'm in the West but I live in GA, and I haven't been able to get it to reset to East.
  Sack's gift
This Honeywell weather station is a wonderful instrument; it's my second purchase of this item, the first being so fun to use I bought this one as a gift and it was happily received, too.
Good item but the manual is terrible!!!
Once I got the time zone set, and also the altitude, this digital barometer worked great. The backlight maybe should stay on a little longer though.

Thanks so much to the other people here who wrote reviews about setting the time zone and the altitude. Without their help I don't know if I would have EVER gotten these two things set correctly! The documentation that came with this item is absolutely horrible. How could they have left out instructions on setting such important data as the time zone and altitude? Mine did not come with any insert telling how to do this. So thanks again to those who took the time to post how to set these -- you were a great big help to me!

Weather instruments have always been a hobby of mine. This is a nice little digital barometer. I only hope that the manufacturer will start including better instructions with their units. It would certainly save a lot of people a lot of irritation.

Q: WHERE IS THE US ATOMIC CLOCK LOCATED?
A: US Atomic clock is located at Fort Collins outside Boulder, Colorado, and is operated by the US Government

Q: WILL MY ATOMIC TIME UNIT WORK IN ALASKA AND HAWAII?
A: If used in Alaska and Hawaii, the Atomic Time clocks will not receive the RF signal from the US Atomic Clock during the normal daylight hours. The 50kW radio signal transmitted at 60 kHz frequency covers the Continental United States (CONUS) and reaches parts of Alaska and Hawaii during the night-time hours. However, this clock can be set manually if the signal from Boulder, Colorado is not able to reach the locations that geographically are not in the US Atomic Clock Time Signal coverage area.

Q: HOW DO I DISABLE/ENABLE ATOMIC TIME SIGNAL RECEPTION MANUALLY?
A: 1. Press and hold UP and DOWN arrow buttons at the same time for 3 seconds and the atomic time radio reception icon located above the seconds will disappear. 2. Press and hold UP and DOWN arrow buttons at the same time for 3 seconds again enabling atomic time radio receiver. The radio reception icon will start flashing showing that the unit is searching for the atomic time signal.

Q: MY TE653ELW DID NOT RECEIVE ATOMIC TIME SIGNAL DURING INITIAL SETUP. HOW THIS CAN BE FIXED?
A: Please, consider the following when atomic time is not set during the initial setup: • During night-time hours, atmospheric conditions improve radio signal reception. A single daily reception is sufficient enough to keep the clock accuracy within milliseconds. • Unit should be positioned 8 feet (2 meters) from interference sources such as a TV, computer, microwave, etc. • The signal reception is weakened within concrete walls found in basements or office buildings. Place the unit near the window for best reception. Once the atomic time signal is received, the date and time will be set automatically, and the atomic time reception icon will appear. Your unit’s atomic clock is programmed to search for the atomic time signal daily each hour between 1:00 am and 4:30 am. Once the time signal has been successfully received, the time and date will be updated automatically.

Q: MY TE653ELW NO LONGER SHOWS AN OUTDOOR/REMOTE TEMPERATURE AND HUMIDITY.WHAT CAN I DO TO FIX THIS?
A: If the main unit display mode for the remote sensor reading shows dashes (- - -), press and hold the DOWN arrow button for 3-4 seconds to begin a new signal search. As soon as the signal search icon will start flashing above the remote channel number release the DOWN arrow button. If the signal isn’t received within two minutes, please make sure that: • Make sure that the red light is flashing from the remote sensor’s LED indicator every 45-47 seconds • The remote sensor is in its proper location. • The distance between main unit and remote sensor is not over 100 feet (30 meters). • The path between units is clear of obstacles. Shorten the distance if necessary. • Fresh batteries are installed correctly in both remote sensor and main unit. • If outdoor temperature reached 32ºF and lower we recommend using lithium batteries versus alkaline • Batteries were inserted into the remote unit first and the main unit next. If there is still no communication, please perform the following steps: • Bring the main unit and remote sensor close together. • Remove the four (4) small screws from the back of the remote sensor with a small Phillips screwdriver and open the battery compartment. • Remove the batteries from the battery compartment and reinstall them in the same manner. Remote sensor LED indicator will flash showing transmission of the signal. • Remove the batteries from the main unit and reinstall them in the same manner. • The remote temperature and humidity appeared on the main unit’s display will show that transmission is being received successfully.

Q: WHERE DO I PLACE A REMOTE SENSOR?
A: Place the remote sensor in the area you intent to measure environmental conditions. Example: If you wish measuring an outdoor environment conditions, place the remote sensor outdoors. If you wish measuring an attic environment conditions, place the remote sensor to the attic, and etc. Outdoors the remote sensor should be placed in a dryer, shaded area. Fog and mist will not harm the remote sensor but direct rain must be avoided. TE653ELW receiver (main unit) has operating range of up to 100 feet in an open area. So sensor should be placed within this operating range. Any walls or other obstacles will reduce this distance.

Q: HOW DO I ACTIVATE THE BACKLIGHT?
A: You can activate the backlight for a short time period by pressing SNOOZE/LIGHT button on the top.

Q: HOW LONG DOES THE BACKLIGHT STAY ON?
A: The backlight will stay on for 5-6 seconds if the LIGHT/SNOOZE button is pressed.

Q: HOW LONG WILL THE BATTERIES LAST IN THE UNIT?
A: The average battery life in the device is 12 months.

Q: WHAT DOES THE COMFORT LEVEL INDICATOR MEAN?
A: The Complete Weather Forecaster is capable of detecting and displaying present comfort levels for the surrounding environment. The environmental comfort level is detected, interpreted and displayed on the main unit’s display based on the combination of the current indoor temperature and humidity readings. See user manual for more information on this topic.
