  Backlight?
Not much trouble setting it up. Outside sensor works well from the exterior wall of my bedroom about 15-20 feet away. Readings jive with my Davis weather station. However Amazon and Honeywell's websites both indicate this product has a blue back light. There is not reference to this on the packaging or the owners manual. I emailed customer support for guidance. I'll let you know what they say.
  Personally, i love it but...
Amazon took WayyyyyYY Too long to ship it to me...and i ordered it a few months ago..and the estimated ship date is in may...what the hell???
so i cancelled
  Hello ... Honeywell??
This thing is a royal pain to set up, and even then if you are fussy enough to actually want the sensor "outdoors," you're in for trouble. I could not get it to transmit 25 feet through a line of sight window for more than a few hours.
It's a toy, and not a very good one at that. It reminded me of the "walkie talkies" kids used to have, that worked only while you and your friend were within 5 feet of each other!
if you only need it for a few months...
I guess I'm one of the lucky ones, mine actually read the outdoor temperature transmitter for about a year, now it's dead. Fresh batteries, sitting right next to each other, no luck.

I think the transmitter actually still works, it's the base that has issues. The base still works as a thermometer, but it just got tired of looking for the signal from the outdoor transmitter. The only way I can get it to work is to remove the batteries from the base...wait, put them back in...it will look for the transmitter for a while and get a reading...then it gets tired of that and gives me dashed lines.

I've tried everything, the thing is just broken. The sad thing is, I just used mine within the house for zone heating purposes...it never had to deal with the elements or anything, never dropped, blocked signals...nothing...it just simply stopped working.
  best of the pack
We have a similar unit by another manufacture at our vacation home. I wanted one for our primary residence but couldn't find the same model and brand. And that's a good thing, because this one out performs our original one. It's more reliable and the batteries have already lasted for a year (the other model required new batteries every few months). I may end up replacing the one in our vacation home with this model. The longer battery life alone could pay for the purchase.
Q: HOW DO I SET THE TIME ZONE ON MY TE109NL??
A: 1. Press and hold MODE button entering into the clock programming mode 2. Keep pressing MODE button until the word “ZONE” is displayed to the right of the flashing digits “0:00”. 3. Use UP or DOWN arrow buttons, adding or subtracting the time in 30 minute increments, according to your location. 4. Press MODE button to exit from programming mode and confirm settings. The clock’s time will be adjusted to the desired time zone.

Q: HOW DO I SET THE ALARM?
A: To set any of the alarms available, select the desired alarm mode by pressing ALARM ON/OFF button. Every time this button is pressed, it will show different alarm mode. Then press and hold ALARM ON/OFF button until the alarm time digits will flash. Finally, set the desired alarm time (hours, minutes) using UP or DOWN arrow buttons and press ALARM ON/OF exiting from the programming mode and confirming the setting.

Q: WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE WEEKDAY (W) AND SINGLE (S) TIME ALARMS?
A: The Weekday (W) alarm is programmed to sound at the set time Mondays through Fridays with “W” letter flashing. The Single (S) day alarm is programmed to sound at the set time with “S” letter flashing only for the specific day and will not activate on subsequent days.

Q: WHAT DOES “PRE-AL” MEAN?
A: When temperature drops below freezing, programmable Ice Warning Alarm (PRE-AL) automatically wakes you up earlier, giving an extra time to get ready. It programmed to sound before the actual alarm if the remote temperature for Channel one (1) will reach 32°F (0°C) and below. You can set this alarm to 15 to 90 minutes earlier than actual time alarm. Ice Warning Alarm (PRE-AL) can only be set if one or both - Weekday or Single alarm previously programmed.

Q: MY TE109NL NO LONGER SHOWS AN OUTDOOR/REMOTE TEMPERATURE.WHAT CAN I DO TO FIX THIS?
A: If the main unit display mode for the remote sensor reading shows dashes (- - -), press and hold the “DOWN” arrow button for 3-4 seconds to begin a new signal search. As soon as the signal search icon will start flashing above the remote channel number release the “DOWN” arrow button. If the signal isn’t received within two minutes, please make sure that: • Make sure that the red light is flashing from the remote sensor’s LED indicator every 47 seconds • The remote sensor is in its proper location. • The distance between main unit and remote sensor is not over 100 feet (30meters). • The path between units is clear of obstacles. Shorten the distance if necessary. • Fresh batteries are installed correctly in both remote sensor and main unit. • If outdoor temperature reached 32ºF and lower we recommend using lithium batteries versus alkaline • Batteries were inserted into the remote unit first and the main unit next. If there is still no communication, please perform the following steps: • Bring the main unit and remote sensor close together. • Remove the four (4) small screws from the back of the remote sensor with a small Phillips screwdriver and open the battery compartment. • Remove the batteries from the battery compartment and reinstall them in the same manner. Remote sensor LED indicator will flash showing transmission of the signal. • Remove the batteries from the main unit and reinstall them in the same manner. • The remote temperature appeared on the main unit’s display will show that transmission is being received successfully.

Q: HOW LONG WILL THE BATTERIES LAST IN THE UNIT?
A: The average battery life in the device is 12 months.
